From its very title, Édouard Glissant's last essay, Philosophie de la Relation. Poésie en étendue, rekindles the age-old debate between poetry and philosophy, and retraces a hesitation that ran through his work from its beginning. Starting from the notion of “poésie en étendue” (extended poetry), this article explores how Glissant ties and unties the bonds between the poem, poetry, thought, and philosophy. By examining the different strata of his work, it searches for the signs of progression in Glissant's thought about this divide between the temptation of philosophy and poetry's call.
