Résumé
-
The French-language literature of Africa and the West Indies is rooted in a context that challenges the domination that has created the conditions for its possibilities. Critical discourse then makes engagement a virtually indispensable criterion of legitimation in the African and West Indian literary sphere. Since engagement is almost always evaluated based on writers’ stands and statements, the critical dimension is suffused with the perspective of an omniscient character. Confronted with this over-evaluation of the author—which produces the temptation of the charismatic—, the issue here, without disputing the central place of the author in the literary design, is to propose that the concept of engagement be again placed at the very heart of textuality. The awareness of the conditions for producing French-language literature, from destabilized orality to constrained writing, makes the text an ideal place for demonstrating the passage that reflects both aesthetic genealogy and the passionate inclusion of literature in the struggle of peoples searching for their dignity.
